This week in parenting 5/3/16

Parents
Differences in parent's parenting styles was found to increase marital conflict with an increase in children's problem behaviors, particularly when one parent viewed the other as being too permissive.

Physiological differences in maternal arousal and regulation while parenting may explain attachment beyond the effect of maternal sensitivity.

Mothers who were mistreated early in life have been found to utilise areas of the brain associated with cognitive empathy when interacting with their child to compensate for defects in emotional empathy and prevent the intergenerational transmission of abuse.

Teenagers
The use of psychological control by parents has been found to increase panic symptoms in teenagers.

Teenagers who perceive their school climate as more negative were found to be at increased risk for internet addiction.

Teenagers whose parent's behavior would be classified as 'positive parenting' were found to be less likely to perpetrate or be the victim of abuse within their relationship, as opposed to those whose parents feel into 'strict/harsh' and 'disengaged/harsh' parenting groups.

Children
A decrease in parental stress and an increase in parental internal locus of control was found to improve child outcomes.

Children with easy temperaments were found to be more likely to be overweight  if they were fussy eaters while children with difficult temperaments were found to be more likely to be overweight if they were emotional eaters.

Greater sibling conflict at the age of 5 was found to increase sleep problems, suggesting this is an important stressor for children.
