This week in parenting 12/3/16

Screens
Increased screen time of parents has been found to be linked to increased screen time of children and distraction away from caregiving tasks. Distraction due to screen time was also found to be linked to decreased responsiveness to children.

More frequent computer usage was found to be linked to more psychological symptoms in teenagers, partially due to sleep disruptions.

Parents were found to primarily use a 'laissez-faire' style towards children's internet usage with the tendency towards this style increasing as children got older.

Increased accessibility of devices was found to increase gaming in teenagers while greater parental regulation decreased it.


Parenting
Higher levels of mindful parenting were found to be associated with a more authoritative parenting style and less parenting stress.

A warning against borrowing from other cultures parenting styles. A study has found that Chinese and American children differ in how they were affected by unsolicited interventions by parents when attempting a challenging task. American children tended to feel hurt or angry by the interventions while Chinese children did not and these feelings influenced the impact of intrusiveness on task motivation.

Breastfeeding has been identified as a trigger for strong emotional sensations and thoughts, including issues of maternal identity and self worth with possible implications for the child.

meta-analysis has indicated that the effect of fathering on the child is statistically different from that of mothers.

A single consultation and behavioral interventions to improve infant sleep has been found to improve infant sleep and maternal emotional well being. 


Teenagers
Teenagers who reported experiencing authoritarian parenting were found to be more likely to experience depressive symptoms than those who experienced authoritative parenting.

A gene variation has been identified which interacts with an absence of positive parenting to increase aggression in teenagers.

Health
The World Allergy Organization have recommended the use of prebiotics for non-exclusivelly breastfed babies.
