This week in parenting research - 2/1/14

Anxiety and depression
study on anxiety in eight year olds has found the highest rates of anxiety in families where parents have a negative emotional involvement toward the child and discordant control.

Financial stress in a family has been found to have a relationship with problem behavior in adolescents. This is mediated by depressive symptoms, interparental conflict and positive parenting.

Children of mothers with depression have been found to socially withdraw from an early age and poor adjustment in the first grade

study has found that early puberty predicts an increased risk for depression in adolescents with more negative cognitive styles and lower emotional clarity

study has found that mothers who suffered prenatal depression were more likely to have children with errors in their speech

Health
Parents who had lower health literacy were found to engage in more infant feeding and activity practices that were associated with obesity

study on the iron status of children aged up to three years found no association with maternal anaemia, diabetes or hypertension. It also found no association with smoking or using medications during pregnancy

A study of sexually active teenagers found boys who had strong family connections were more likely to use condoms.

study on the sleep of adolescents has found that poorer sleep duration was associated with greater stress the next day.

Genetics
A large twin study has found a high heritability for parental feelings about parenting. This is particularly strong for negative feelings towards parenting.

A twin study has indicated that academic achievement and poor behaviors at kindergarten are largely due to environmental factors with the impact of genetic factors being found to be between 8 and 44%.

Parenting techniques

A study has found that children whose parents use the teaching technique 'scaffolding' had higher levels of self regulation at preschool while parents who set limits had greater gains in self-regulation over the same time

Children of parents who used proactive parenting techniques were found to have better self-regulation at age five.

A neurological study has found adults who were insecurely attached as infants have changes in the neural circuitry for emotion regulation

An study has shown that a reduction in negative parenting in difficult parenting situations is associated with improved behavior in children who have problem behavior

study has found that children who socialize with their peers with an authority figure present were more likely to witness or hear violence in their community
